There were a few bands in the late 1970s/early 1980s going by the name Soviet Sex. Needless to say, finding out info about them is a bit difficult because if you type “Soviet Sex” into Google, well… yeah, I’m sure you can imagine. So we’ll just leave it at that.
I found this five-song 12″ at the Academy Records Annex in Brooklyn during our recent trip to NYC, and it looked like the kind of thing I’d be into. And it is. Soviet Sex is early 1980s new wave, complete with prominent saxophone. It’s everything you’d expect to be, and definitely good enough that the band could have had a shot had they just gotten that one big break so essential to launching a music career back in the day. A little poppy, a little funky, a bit off-the-wall, and even a dose of reggae riddim on “Youth of America” – it’s got something for everyone.
