I’m currently all about this record.
Basically Detroit Compilation is 11 hip hop style tracks contributed by different Detroit area techno artists, so they have characteristics that are both electronic/techno and hip hop. I found this amazing gem in the DJ Masa collection at Silver Platters the other day, and so far I’ve played it three times through in the last three days. I don’t know any of the artists, and frankly I’m not even sure how to describe it, but if you have the two record vinyl version and just play side A, you’ll hear everything you need to know. You’ve got pure electronic with some hip hop beats, a track with some sampled vocals, and at least one, “Gusto,” that sounds like a straight in-your-face hip hop masterpiece.
It’s not on iTunes, so you’ll have to look for it. But trust me, it’s 100% worth it.
